Welcome to the hidden world of birdwatching in the eastern region of Colombia. Stretching along 250 kilometers of the majestic Orinoco River, the Vichada department offers an unparalleled sanctuary for bird lovers.
From the mouth of the Guaviare River to the Meta River, this landscape boasts navigable waters, with the exception of the areas around the Atures and Maipures streams, which Humboldt considered the eighth wonder of the world.
Itinerary
You will take the flight from Bogotá to Puerto Carreño that takes about 1.5 hours.
Our host will be waiting for you at Puerto Carreño's airport to welcome you and guide you to the local restaurant to have lunch.
(Depending on the flight arrival, it’s possible that you should stay that night in Puerto Carreño)
We will have a 3.5 hour trip on our 4x4 landcruiser where we will cross over 100 km of natural Savannah and using ferries to cross rivers along the way.
During this transfer, we might see species such as Large-billed Tern, Fork-tailed Flycatcher, Eared Dove and Southern Lapwing.
Our staff will be waiting to welcome you at Orinoco Lodge with an appetizer, the safety briefing and the whole instructions for the following days.
Begin the day early as we depart the lodge for an exciting expedition along the Tomo River.
The skiff trip will take approximately one hour to reach this stunning location situated on the edge of the El Tuparro National Park.
Here we’ll find beautiful species such as the Violaceous Jay, Tropical Gnatcatcher, Green-tailed Jacamar, Black-collared Hawk, Yellow-
crowned Manakin, and Gray-fronted Dove.
Caño Peinillas will be the perfect place to take a delicious and refreshing bath under its crystal-clear waters and the perfect scenery for a
traditional lunch
We will leave the lodge at 6:00 am and we will head towards the Maipures streams. During our trip over the rocks jutting out of the river we might see Large-billed Tern, Black Skimmer, Snowy Egret and Little-blue Heron.
Upon reaching the rapids of the Maipures, we will walk a few meters to an island where we can find interesting species such as Brown-crested flycatcher, Neotropic cormorant, Glittering- throated Hummingbird and Squirrel cuckoo.
We will have a special lunch time where our chef will surprise us with one of his best preparation at the edge of the river
Here we will have a camping lunch and after to enjoy this magic place with a relaxing time, we will continue with an exciting hike to the rock
formations of the Guiana shield.
Early in the morning, our journey begins on the pristine waters of the
Tuparro River.
As we navigate, keep your eyes on the wonderful Black-and-white
Hawk-eagle and Black-collared Hawk.
The unique ecosystem surrounding these waters is home to a multitude
of remarkable species, including the Muscovy Duck, Pied Lapwing,
Amazonian-black Tyrant, Ruddy Pigeon, White-throated Toucan, Cobalt-winged Parakeet and Yellow-crowned Manakin.
Starting the day early in the morning, we will go from Orinoco Lodge to Puerto Carreño. During the journey, we will explore the natural savannah aboard our 4x4 Landcruiser until we reach Rancho Baru.
The vast sxpanse of white sands is home to species such as the Ferruginous Pygmy-owl, Sulphury flycatcher, Gray elaenia, South American snape, Red-and-green Macaw and rufous-browed Peppershrike.
By around noon, we will arrive at Rancho Baru, where you will be welcomed with a traditional lunch a brief cultural presentation.
This privilileged area offers the opportunity to explore Caño mesetas and take a refreshing bath in its waters while observing wonderful species such as the Ringed kingfisher, Snowy egret, Ruddy pigeon, Southern Lapwing and others.
At the end of the day, we will reach Carreño plaza, where you will have a free evening to rest and reflect on the exciting journey you have had.
After breakfast, we will have free time to enjoy the warm morning and
prepare to say goodbye to this paradise.
Our host will pick you up at the hotel to take you to the airport and take your flight back to Bogotá.
