Overview
This is the driest part of Colombia with different habitats such as the subxerophytic forests of La Guajira where 17 species of endemic birds that are only shared with northern Venezuela can be recorded, including: Vermilion cardinal, Orinocoan saltator, Buffy humminbirdg, Tocuyo sparrow. Then we visited the majestic Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta, the highest coastal mountain in the world at almost 6,000 meters high and home to 30 species of endemic birds including: Santa Marta woodstar, white, Santa Marta antipitta, Santa Marta Antbird, Santa Marta foliage gleaner, Santa Marta warbler, among others.
Itinerary
I recommend a flight that leaves Bogota at 1:54 p.m. and arrives in Riohacha (La Guajira) at 3:36 p.m. on the Avianca airline. At the airport in Riohacha, the guide and driver will be waiting for you to drive 40 minutes to the La Consentida hotel in the Camarones district.
Dinner and overnight: Hotel La Consentida
Accompanied by a professional guide and a local guide, you can explore several trails in very dry forest where you can record species of interest such as: Vermilion cardinal, Buffy hummingbird, Orinocoan jumper, Glaucous Tanager, Slender-billed Tyrannulet, Bare-eyed Pigeon, Green-rumped Parrotlet, White-whiskered Spinetail, Tropical Gnatcatcher, Trinidad Euphonia, Pileated Finch and others.
Before lunch, we will check the edge of the Laguna Navio Quebrado, sometimes you can see American flamingos from that place, as well as a number of aquatic and marine birds, some of these migratory birds among which we can mention: American Oystercatcher, Killdeer, Semipalmated Plover, Whimbrel, Long-billed Curlew, Ruddy Turnstone.
Lunch will be at the Restaurant La Consentida, in the afternoon you can explore other trails to continue finding more species of interest.
Dinner and overnight: Hotel La Consentida
After breakfast at the hotel, you will begin to drive for 1 hour to the Miramar Nature Reserve, where you will travel through several tropical rainforest trails to find species of interest such as: Scaled Pigeon, Keel-billed Toucan, Black-crowned Antshrike, White-bellied Antbird, Lance-tailed Manakin, White-bearded Manakin, Golden-headed Manakin, Red-legged Honeycreeper, Buff-throated Saltator.
After lunch, you will drive for 2 hours to arrive in Minca around 5 pm.
Dinner and night: Hotel Minca La Casona
In the morning after breakfast, you will start driving towards the Bella Vista trail, making stops along the way to record species of interest such as: Swallow tanager, Golden-winged Sparrow, Cocoa woodcreeper, Rofous-breasted Wren, Scaled piculet, Santa Marta brushfinch, Scaled pigeon.
Lunch is at Casa Café, in the afternoon you will take a walk around the house to record some endemic bird species such as: Santa Marta tapaculo, Santa Marta foliage-gleaner, Santa Marta brushfinch, Santa Marta woodstar, Black-headed tanager and another
Night: Casa café hospedaje
This day we leave at 5 am, to drive on an unpaved road for 2 hours to the San Lorenzo ridge where you can see most of the endemic bird species such as: Santa Marta toucanet, Brown-rumped Tapaculo, Sierra Nevada Antpitta, Rufous-tailed Hummingbird, Sierra Nevada Brushfinch, Santa Marta Parakeet, Hermit Wood-Wren, Santa Marta Warbler and Streak-capped Spinetail. It is also an incredible view on one side of the snow-capped peaks with palm trees and clouds, and on the other side you can see the Caribbean Sea.
Lunch at the coffee house, in the afternoon you can explore the surroundings of the house.
Night: Casa café hospedaje
After breakfast at the hotel, they will move towards the Tagua and Central Cordoba areas to observe other interesting species such as: Rosy-thrush Tanager, Black-chested Jay, Orange-billed Nightingale-thrush, Cinnamon Flycatcher, Groove-billed Toucanet, Rusty-breasted Antpitta.
Lunch at the lodge's cafe and then they will start to descend towards Minca, where they will spend the night.
Night: Hotel Minca
We start driving at 5 am to arrive at 6:30 am at Via Parque Isla de Salamanca where we can explore some mangrove trails to record new species for the general list, among which we can mention: Sapphire-bellied Hummingbird, Bare-throated Tiger-Heron, Red-rumped Woodpecker, Golden-green Woodpecker, Turquoise-winged Parrotlet, Bronzed Cowbird, Bicolored Conebill and others. Around the way we will be dropping you off at the Barranquilla airport to take the flight back home.
